Beginning Middle End

In the movie Gladiator, the ending consists of Maximus dying at the hands of the corrupt emperor.  The ending is amazing because Maximus was able to defeat the emperor that could have been the downfall of Rome in his final battle for his life. It is a bittersweet moment because Maximus is reunited with his family in the afterlife which was his ultimate wish after his family was murdered through the order of the emperor.

I feel that I am concluding one of the easiest chapters of my life. High school was easy, especially in comparison to the other schools in our nation. Trying to get into college, paying college fees, separating from my family, succeeding in the advanced classes I will begin to take, and facing the racism I know will be directed towards me will be very difficult. It is an ending to the easiest chapter of my life but I am ready to take it on because a new beginning is coming and I need to prepare myself for it. Wish me luck.

Superior Position

In the movie Gladiator, Maximus and the emperors sister plan the escape of many infamous gladiators, property of the emperor. Maximus and his general continue with their plans to escape and ultimately fight against the emperor until he is slain. However, what Maximus and the general do not know is that while they are going as is according to their plans, the emperors sister, being threatened, tells the emperor of Maximus's plans to storm the prisons and to take over Rome.

An idea for superior position in my film could be the main character being prepared to shoot their victims with a ray gun that will turn them into the food that they eat, while the victims continue with their daily activities because they are clueless as to the main characters plans. Another idea for superior position in an action film could be a bad guy planting a bomb in a building upon which law enforcement, or people trying to stop that person will enter. When the opposing party enters, they will be clueless as to the actions of the bad guy an will in turn be blown up.

Undeserved Misfortune

An example of undeserved misfortune from a movie can be found in the movie Titanic, more than half of the passengers drown in the Atlantic ocean on the Titanic's first voyage across the ocean.  The movies point of view focuses in Jack and Rose two young lovers who are both victims of undeserved misfortune even before the ship begins to sink. Rose suffers under an extremely controlling mother and a fiancee who although wealthy, also represents clout to Roses' free will. Jack is a poor boy who grew up without parents and finds himself the bad luck to be on the ship through a card game. Before that however, he sleeps beneath bridges and works extremely hard for food, trying to make a living. By stepping onto the ship, his fate is sealed and receives his final dose of bad luck and heartbreak.

An example of undeserved misfortune are the 911 attacks on the twin towers. Hundreds of people died, including those who were trying to help those who were at the places that were attacked. It is very sad and unfair for people to be attacked through terrorism. The people who boarded the planes were also extremely unlucky and completely unaffiliated to the terrorists who attacked the Pentagon, Towers, and attacked the mailing system.

My idea for undeserved misfortune for a film takes place in the early 1900's. A young African American man works extremely hard his entire life to make a living and survive the social difficulties of his time. When he begins to make a living through his newly established business. However, the business is quickly burned to the ground and the man is taken to jail through false accusations simply because he is of color. The purpose of the film is to highlight  the difficulties and unfairness directed towards people of color throughout Americas history.

Conflict

In the movie Toy Story, the conflict lies in that Andy's toys are trying to get back home. The movie follows that the characters move from one location to another, trying to find transportation or directions to get back home. An example of conflict in real life could be a young student trying to put his grades back up in school. An idea for a film could be someone struggling with a relationship. They have issues with their boyfriend or girlfriend, usually something unimportant, and in the end they can get back together.

My Film Job

Ever since the sixth grade when I signed up for the drama class, I have had a passion for acting. We worked on several small plays, but our major ones were A Mid-Summer Nights Dream and Romeo and Juliet, both by William Shakespeare.  In both shows i had the pleasure of playing a main character, and I loved it. Even now, acting is something I carry in my heart and view with extreme interest. If I was ever to work on a movie or television series, I would, without a doubt, want to be an actor because of my passion for being on stage. However, dreams don't always come true, and because most people do not become actors out of the blue, I believe I would enjoy being a casting director because I would have the opportunity to work with the actors and the direction of stage action.

My Review Of The Elephant Man

The movie The Elephant Man made me cry at least two times. I thought it was an extremely sad movie that represented a lot of the ways that people in my community, including myself, act. The cruelty with which the characters treated John Merrick was hideous. I was very sad when I saw John being treated as an animal several times throughout the movie. I think that in my society, people act this way with others as well. Bullying, racism, and shutting people out, simply because they are different is very common in my community, and I can relate it to the way people acted towards John Merrick.  When people would stare at John, and people would take advantage of him, I found myself questioning whether I had ever done something like that before. I doesn't have to be something like abusing, or calling someone a monster, it could have been simply by alienating someone because of their character, the way they look, where they come from, or what their beliefs are. It made me realize that people can be hurt very easily and sometimes it can be hard for someone else to understand that. Watching the elephant man made me want to change my attitude towards other people because even though Im not doing something that i believe affects them directly, I might be making a huge impact on their daily life. I give this movie five stars for forcing people to question their humanity and allowing the public to see who the real monsters are.

My Name Is John Merrick

Early today Bytes beat me. He whipped me like an animal in front of the child. I wish I had the courage or the strength to stop him but I cant. I am slow and weak and my body does not let me move as easily as other people. Even if i did stand up to him, what am i supposed to do afterwards? I cannot take care of myself, I cannot even walk in the street without causing fear. I am also very sick, so sick in fact, the boy went to go get Dr. Treves from the hospital to come and get me. When he saw me, Bytes told him that I fell, but i think Dr. Treves is smarter than him and knows that he hit me. I hope that he does because i want him to protect me and keep me with him in his hospital. He brought me to a beautiful hospital with a clean room and a nice, soft bed. He fed me and made sure I was comfortable. One nurse came in the room and yelled when she saw me, she gave me a terrible scare. Yet, I am still more comfortable here than anywhere near Bytes. I hope that I can stay here in the hospital where Bytes will never hurt me again and i will be safe and nobody will come to stare at me. I even think Dr. Treves wants to talk to me and it seems he actually cares about me but I am still a little shy about talking to him and its really hard for me to speak because i do not have a lot of practice talking. I think if I practice speaking on my own, I can show Dr. Treves that I am not an imbecile and that I know how to read and write and I can hold conversations like normal people too.

Welcome To My Nightmare

On one winter night, I had a nightmare I will never forget. It began as I walked through old, run down apartments. They were dark and stormy looking, a horrid green color, and up at the top, the sky was blocked by a giant set of bars. There was no way out of the buildings.  I then moved on into my own apartment which became my restroom. My mother was inside and she was brushing her teeth. I grabbed my own toothbrush and began brushing as well. However, when i looked back up instead of my own  reflection, the devil stood in my place. It was the face of death and a face i will never forget. He had a metal face with three horns resembling short elephant tusks in the place where his mouth should have been. The eyes were black empty holes that held my eyes and that i could not look away from. Feeling the shock of my life, my face quickly showed my dread and I heard my mother yell "Don't show him you are afraid!". However, it was too late. I as looked back into the mirror, my own reflection had returned, but instead of toothpaste in my mouth, it turned to blood that began streaming out and filling my throat till i could no longer breath and began to choke. I ran into the next room, which should have been where my brother and sister were sleeping, however it wasn't. My brother and sister were on a platform, which i quickly ran onto when i realized what was running towards them. The devil had once again appeared and this time it was clear that he was coming to attack. He was going to push us over the edge. I threw my brother onto my back where he clung onto me like a monkey. I could not carry my sister. She was too big and they were both too heavy for me. I ran and ran holding her hand, dragging her aside me. But when it came time to jump, she was too young and was not strong enough to get to the other side. She fell, and she died. My brothers weight pulled me back and he fell. He died. I was able to hod onto the edge be he was not strong enough to hold onto me. I pulled myself up and kept running and he never stopped chasing me.

Compassionate Science

The media is a strong tool that allows us to see many of the things around us. Through social networking, I have seen the things that are possible through hearing aids. From a baby's smile, to a woman's tears, this technology has strongly changed the lives of many people. At UCI there is a center designed specifically for hearing research and there are many students working hard to develop new technologies for hearing aids. I was able to see the improvements that this technology has gained over the years, moving from vague, hard to hear background noises, to clearer, more concise word forms. To be able to think of something this advanced and refine it with so much detail, a person has to have a lot of dedication. I believe that to go through with a precess as tedious and time consuming as this one, a person will usually have a passion for completing the task they have at hand. I think compassion in the medical field is what allows people to not only be successful in the field, but allows them to contribute to it. There are many prevailing issues in the medical field, some being cancer, diabetes, and HIV.  These are all issues that have no cure. However, through hours of hard work and determined research, i believe that one day one person will be able to overcome the obstacles that plague our communities and be able to help people all around the world.

My Thoughts On Bullying

I believe that every single person you meet at one point in their life has been a victim of bullying. Everyone experiences bullying in a psychological way, and i believe that it reaches us through propaganda. We see it on television, the internet, ads, billboards, the radio, and even by word of mouth. People are bullied every day into purchasing different things, starting new treatments, and meeting new people. "Get thin quick!"and "Be the best in the best car!"  are only some of the slogans that manipulate people into psychological disorders, and an overall feeling of despair. Why is it that so many people care so much about the way the look? think? act? It is because we are bullied into behaving certain ways and believing certain actions are more correct that others. We all must learn to realize that our indirect comments, and sometimes even the way we act can have powerful impacts on others.  We can help people feel better about themselves and their peers by supporting them in their decisions and teaching them that they are above bullying, a petty way of making themselves feel better than their peers.

The Future

In 100 years, the economic and technological aspects of our community will have been steered towards battling pollution and the destruction of our plant. Oxygen generators and methods for reforestation will be in full bloom. Perhaps creatures that where once extinct will be reappearing due to DNA engineering. Perhaps the way we get our electricity will be different- only from wind power. Materials used in construction shall be pro-green and our communities will be healthier places to live in. Or, perhaps they wont. Perhaps the cutting down of trees, pollution of water sources, wasting of paper, electricity, and many other things will continue to occur without end. We will slow asphyxiate in our own poisonous emissions and, due to the lack of trees will also lack oxygen. Animals will begin to go extinct due to the lack of homes. Our lands will become infertile and we will no longer be able to obtain the fruits and vegetables we need through farming. The ocean will have become a poisonous, oily mess the cannot give fish or any other type of food source and the human race will parish. We have become our own plague.

Good Laugh

One time, my little brother and sister wanted my mother and I to watch the movie Nanny McPhee with them. So we all sat down in the living room and put the movie on. It was such a ridiculous movie. At several points within the movie, My mother and i shot disbelieving glances at each other from across the room. Many of the things in the movie were absolutely ridiculous! When the movie got to a point where pigs from a farm were doing synchronized swimming in a lake, my mother looked at each other and bust into hysterical laughter. We laughed so hard my siblings turned the volume on the television nearly all the way. I laughed so hard I collapsed onto the floor for about fifteen minutes. My head felt like it was going to burst and i had started a small puddle on the living room floor from crying so hard. I finally had to stand up when i nearly threw up on the floor. I stood up, ran to the restroom, threw up and promptly continued laughing. I will never laugh so hard again in my life.

Modern Times

Modern Times is a realistic film that depicts the harsh reality of our society. Charlie Chaplin presents the setting in the future. What should be a perfect, harmonious, easy job setting turns out to be a harbor for oppression and hard labor. This is an ironic contrast to the title of the movie because America has seen this type of oppression throughout many years, yet it still has not been solved in modern times. The most impacting part of the film was when Chaplin presents the outside world to the viewers. It is a hard, cold place to live in with much poverty and hunger running rampant in the streets. The girl he befriends becomes a symbol of the innocence that is lost when her father is killed and her family is taken from her. This film has an excellent representation of the goals of hardworking people; simply a good meal and a roof to sleep under. My favorite part of the movie was when Chaplin finally achieved a job he was good at. However, even this part of the movie becomes a symbol when the police, the prevailing form of government once again pursues Chaplin and his friend, taking their only form of income and survival. The film contains a strong message about the purpose of survival and how not only is food and money important, but the need for the happiness given from a family will always prevail, even in the worst situations.

Favorite Movie

Ever since seventh grade, when i took World History, the movie Gladiator,  has always been my favorite movie. Taking place in Rome, a general is taken captive and forced to participate in the bloody death games held in The Coliseum. The beauty of this movie is given through the amazing shots of all the settings in which the movie takes place. The battles, coliseum, and even the countryside are shown beautifully from different angles and perspectives. Every scene shows beautiful details, whether it is in a character, costumes, or even the architecture.
